Army veteran Walter Smith, once homeless and unemployed, found stable housing and retooled his job skills with help from a United Way-funded program that serves veterans in need. Walter needed a job next, and had lined up some promising interviews. But he couldn’t afford to get to them, until he received a bus pass through United Way’s Veterans Transportation Assistance Campaign. “I would never have been able to make it otherwise,” he says. “Now I’m gainfully employed. I have a great job.” When one of his new co-workers offered him a ride to work every day, Walter returned his unused bus passes so another struggling veteran might succeed like he has. "To give them back is helping another veteran," he says.
For every $100 we raise, a veteran like Walter will receive one month of bus transportation to help them get back on their feet.
